About This Special Issue
Most communal farmers are practising conservation agriculture. The effects of conservation agriculture in terms of improvements in rural livelihoods and food security are not evident amongst adopters. The objectives of the study are to assess the socio economic characteristics of farmers practising conservation agriculture and identify the factors affecting adoption rate of conservation agriculture in ward 2 of Rushinga district. Purposive sampling is used to selected participants in the survey, which is conducted using a questionnaire. Aspects captured include social demography, factors affecting adoption of conservation tillage and effects of conservation agriculture. Adoption of conservation agriculture are influenced by a plethora of factors. However, conservation agriculture has sighted improvements in socio-economic status as a result of enjoying the proceeds of improved yields and consequently improved livelihoods. Communal farmers can send their children to school, meet their day to day needs and even build better houses if they adopt conservation agriculture. However, government and organisations should promote conservation agriculture through the provision of technical knowledge and coming up with labour saving technologies.
