About This Special Issue
Hypoglycemia in diabetes mellitus remains a worldwide occurrence. With the projected incident of diabetes expected to continue to increase in all parts of the world exponetially, concerted effort need to be put in place on time to curb a commensurate increase in the occurrence of hypoglycemia complicating diabetes management as treatment modalities for diabetes get more intensified with the use of existing drugs and introduction of newer ones with hypoglycemia as a known side effect. Despite the disease burden of hypoglycemia complicating management of diabetes mellitus worldwide in the 21st century, the attention of the endocrine community to this metabolic challenge in the optimal management of diabetes is grossly inadequate. This raises the need for more attention on research internationally in this area which is why this special issue is on to fill the gap in our scientific knowledge of hypoglycemia complicating diabetes management.
Currently, there are existing issue on worldwide definition, classification and drug of choice in diabetics with hypoglycemia complicating their management. The fact that hypoglycemia can predispose to cardiovascular risk and aggravate diabetic nephropathy make it more reason why hypoglycemia have to be researched into so as to reduce the co-morbidities associated with the chronic hyperglycemic state seen in people living with diabetes mellitus. The economic loss to various nation couples with the millions of dollars spent annually in the search for cure for diabetes and reduction of morbidity for the same makes it a worthwhile venture to not only research but also equip the general population on the necessary skill needed to curb hypoglycemia which could occur in any setting be it home, community, hospital or any other setting. These issues needs extensive research to solve.
It is hoped that the insight the special issue will bring will meet present scientific need, stimulate further research interest and create a platform for future scientific research.
