Assessment of Inclusive Institutional Policies in a Brazilian University

Abstract: The production of affirmative action policies aimed at reducing the inequalities in participation of different, more vulnerable groups in accessing university education is already a widely disseminated reality in Brazil. These policies encompass Black, mixed-race, Indigenous, and people with disabilities. Engaging in a discussion on this topic involves recognizing institutional strategies aimed at improving the quality of education with an intersectional and inclusive perspective within the university. With that in mind, the study sought to identify how the academic community (students, staff, and professors) assesses inclusive institutional policies at a Brazilian public university. The data collection was carried out through the application of the Higher Education Inclusion Index (INES) to establish parameters for characterizing the presence and/or absence of these policies within the university. Additionally, a database of normative/institutional documents was organized to contribute to a broader understanding of the responses obtained in the study. The results highlighted that the university has not been considered an accessible and inclusive place for everyone, according to the perceptions of those who are part of it. On one hand, they point to the absence of inclusive institutional norms despite the documents found in the study, but on the other hand, these findings indicate the need for community involvement in their development, in order for it to be a promising path towards the intended direction. In conclusion, it is evident that INES has been considered a tool for institutional evaluation situated within the theoretical-conceptual movement for social transformation, advocating for a more democratic and inclusive university.

Abstract: Learning loss due to COVID-19 in the science classroom extends beyond the academic measurements of standardized assessments. This loss limits students' ability to apply what they learn in the classroom to the real world. While schools were closed during the pandemic, students did not have the opportunity to enhance what they learned in the sciences with hands-on and inquiry-based experiences. This loss of experience left students unprepared to thoroughly learn science when they returned to an in-person classroom. The solutions to this loss of laboratory time, including virtual and at-home laboratory activities, did not bridge the gap needed to overcome the learning loss before the students returned to school. Though well-intentioned, the students did not develop the kinesthetic skills necessary to start the subsequent and more advanced laboratory course on their return. Some of these alternative solutions put the student and their family at risk to accidents while exposing the teacher and their districts to a broader range of liabilities. The focus of the science lab is to allow students to develop an understanding of the world around them in a safe and supervised environment. Pandemic-induced school closures hampered our ability to provide students with the experiences they needed to develop the understanding necessary to succeed.

Abstract: Different instructors in various area of the country have conducted studies on improving student motivation in the classroom. The active participation of learners is crucial for effective teaching and learning methods. However, the contribution of both inside and outside of the classroom is lacking in this regard. It is important to understand the factors that contribute to successful learner participation when implementing active learning method in the class room. At Wallaga University specially, among second-year surveying engineering students in the college of engineering and technology, learner contribution is low. This is primarily because active learning methods are not being effectively utilized. Based on these findings factors that affect learner participation in the class room include the lack of active learning methods, improper seating arrangements, lack of encouragement, fear and hesitation, lack of confidence, socio-cultural background, language barriers, and relationship between learners and instructors. Therefore, the researchers have taken action to identify which active learning methods are more effective in bringing about changes in learners, properly arrange classroom sizes, provide opportunity for learners to practice educational language, establish good relationship with learners, create a safe environment for them to express their thoughts without fear, and allocate sufficient time for them to share their ideas.

Abstract: The current education of socialist core values in universities is facing a more complex situation. The institutional guarantee and resource integration of core value education lack effective docking, and the goal planning and practical content have yet to be effectively implemented. Cultural guidance and humanistic cultivation urgently need to be effectively deepened. Overall, in the context of comprehensively promoting the rule of law in society, there is an inherent correlation between the rule of law thinking and the construction of socialist core values in universities. The rule of law is conducive to clarifying the normative standards for the construction of socialist core values in universities, promoting the practical implementation of socialist core value construction in universities, and guiding the moral orientation of socialist core value construction in universities. In the new social situation, universities, as the main front for cultivating and spreading socialist core values, need to constantly innovate ways and methods, and be guided by the ideological needs of young students. They should carry out institutional innovation, practical implementation, and effective guidance based on the rule of law thinking, legal methods, and legal culture.
