Effect of Potting Media and Variety on Growth, Yield and Quality of Hot Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) Under Jimma Condition, South West Ethiopia

Abstract: A greenhouse experiment was conducted at Jimma University College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (JUCAVM) during the season of 2016/2017. The rapid population increase and land scarcity calls for an alternative of crop production for sustenance of the human race. Productivity of Hot pepper is limited due to Lack of improved, good quality and well adapted varieties, nutrient depletion (poor soil fertility) and inappropriate fertilizer utilization. Treatments consisted of four hot pepper varieties (Mareko Fana, Melka Shote, Melka Awaze and Local Variety) and five potting media mixture (Topsoil, FYM + Top soil + Sand, Compost + Top soil + Sand, Compost + FYM + top soil and Top soil +Sand). The result of the study showed in most cases all the studied growth parameters were significantly higher in pot treated by compost +FYM + top soil and control treatment was significantly reduced the all the plant growth parameter. Accordingly, the tallest and lowest plant height was recorded from variety Melka shote and Local variety respectively. Also the study revealed that higher significant (p<0.05) interactions between potting media and varieties on days to 50% flowering, days to 50% fruit set, days to 50% fruit maturity, days to first harvest, mean number of flowers per plant, mean number of primary branches, number of fruit per plant, number of seed per fruit, pericarp thickness, fruit length and fruit diameter. As a result, the earliest variety to attain days to 50% flowering, days to 50% fruit set and days to 50% fruit maturity and also days to first harvest was recorded from Mareko Fana in PM4. The highest number of fruits per plant was from Melka Shote with mixture of PM4, while Mareko Fana was the highest fruit weight per hak and number of seed per fruit in the potting media of PM4. Similarly, the longest, widest, thickest fruit size and highest cost benefit ratio was attained from Mareko Fana with in PM4. In addition, Mareko Fana were highly preferred and accepted by consumers and this may be attributed to its high quality, larger fruits size and diameter. As results from the study revealed, PM4 could be successfully used to obtain better growth, yield and quality of hot pepper. However, further testing is required in different locations on different potting media.

Abstract: Throughout the decades, the construction industry was suffered for its business sustainability, mainly due to its complexity by nature that results in poor productivity, across the industry. This can be improved through implementing of Technology Management the innovative ways, which consists of Knowledge Management, Building Information Modelling, block-chain technology and e-procurement, throughout pre- and post-contract implementation stages that involve the function of Design, Procure, Execution, and Commissioning; as well as applications on the existing building, for the benefits to ease of building maintenance, and life-savings shall there be any disaster. Building Information Modelling not being applied as technology by itself, but also as a platform to improve interactions among stakeholders. This paper aims to emphasize on the external as well as internal factors that influence the business transformation towards Technology Management, and its contribution on construction business sustainability. Particularly, to discuss the benefits and contribution on the electronics-Procurement implementation, the failure factors were also being discussed; then the importance of company’s knowledge culture that creates a knowledge sharing environment for better information sharing and system implementation; lastly, to discuss how innovation approach by integrating Block-Chain Technology and Building Information Modelling enhance the construction company’s competitiveness within the industry, for sustainability grow.

Abstract: The experiment was under taken among the amount of water and mulching practice at Adami Tulu Agricultural Research Center of experimental site for head cabbage production. With the objective of to investigate and evaluate the effect of furrow irrigation level and mulching on water productivity, yield and yield component of head cabbage. A field experiment was designed as a two factor factorial experiment (2*4) in RCBD, replicated three times. The two factors were irrigation water level and mulching material. Irrigation was applied to furrows using Parshal flume from furrows head ditch with similar inflow rate, but the amount of application of water varies. Results obtained revealed that Application of wheat straw mulch and plastic mulch significantly increased the growth and yield of cabbage. Straw mulch produced total yield of 9.68 ton/ha which was not significantly different with that obtained under White straw mulch (9.69ton/ha). Total yield harvested from black plastic mulch were 9.33ton/ha, which showed insignificant difference between the three mulching material. High yield of 16.60ton/ha was recorded from full irrigation that is 100%ETc and when half of irrigation water applied the yield were 9.4ton/ha which showed significant difference between the two irrigation level. Water productivity of 4.3kg/m3 and 3.8kg/m3 were produced under 50%ETc and 100%ETc or full irrigation water respectively. It was found that 50%ETc irrigation level saved 50% of water as compared to full irrigation and can irrigate additional land with the amount of water saved.

Abstract: Based on the same author’s previous study, A Systematic Approach of Lean Supply Chain Management in Shipbuilding, this paper presents further analysis on the uncertainty of supply chain management in shipbuilding, clarifies the nature of uncertainty in the supply chain of shipbuilding, and establishes a systematic improvement model of lean supply chain management to mitigate the uncertainty of supply chain in shipbuilding. It refines the systematic approach on the respect of uncertainty and radically improvement of the theory. With the cases study, it is learnt that uncertainty of the supply chain in shipbuilding forces some trivial, particular, and detailed supply to become urgent issues, especially in the later stage when the ship closes to delivery; in these cases, the solution of solving such urgent parts causes the shipyard to pay a much higher cost. Less urgent issues and uncertainty in the supply chain of shipbuilding can not only benefit the total cost of the supply chain but also the efficiency of building processes. In a systematic path, this paper analyzes the root causes of the uncertainty of the supply chain management in shipbuilding in terms of technical specification, standardization ratio, unforeseen damage and defects, and change of demand schedule. The uncertainty of supply chain management in shipbuilding can be mitigated and reduced by means of high-quality design and engineering, higher standardization ratio in the parts and fittings, and proper safety margin on schedule time. After the procedure of LSCM obtained and refined by circulation for perfection, the professional software bund with new technology devices makes digital transformation reality. In the digital LSCM system, all performance measurement results with the original data of LSCM can be calculated and shown for the management. Therefore, the uncertainty of the LSCM in shipbuilding can be easily captured and solved.
