The primary goal of this special issue is to understand the Tropical Pacific Ocean Dynamics and Its Interaction with Indian Ocean. The Tropical Pacific Ocean hosts various modes of climate variability, such as the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) which is the Earth’s strongest source of year-to-year climate variability. ENSO plays an important role in climate variability over Indian Ocean, for instance Indian Ocean Sea Surface Temperature (SST), upwelling and heat content.
Many theories have been developed to explain the generation mechanism of Tropical Pacific Ocean processes, particularly those that govern ENSO. However, gaps remain, as attested in part by persistent deficiencies in modeling and predicting the climate. Improving knowledge of some fundamental physics of the Tropical Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean variability is required to advance climate modeling and prediction. This includes further understanding interactions with remote regions, as the tropical Pacific Ocean interacts with processes occurring in other oceans through oceanic and atmospheric channels (Pacific Ocean-Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean-Atlantic Ocean, interaction with high-latitude climate such as the Arctic) on a broad range of timescales.
In this Research Topic, we welcome contributions that examine the basic physics and features of oceanic processes in the Tropical Pacific Ocean, including interactions with the atmosphere and remote regions, as well as the implications on Indian Ocean variability, atmosphere, and hydroclimate (snowpack, drought, streamflow variability, etc.), and on subseasonal-to-decadal climate prediction.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
Observational, modelling and theoretical understanding of the Tropical Pacific Ocean; Impacts of the Tropical Pacific Ocean on Indian Ocean climate (weather); and Advances in the development of predictability methods (statistical, dynamical, complex model) in Indian-Pacific climate (weather). In this Research Topic, we welcome contributions of Original Research Articles, Data Report, and Review Articles, case studies, etc. related to Tropical Pacific Ocean dynamics and its impact on Indian Ocean Variability.
Through this special issue, we aim to improve our understanding about the tropical Pacific and Indian Ocean dynamics. We welcome researchers from various disciplines to provide interdisciplinary perspectives on Tropical Pacific Ocean Dynamics and Its Interaction with Indian Ocean: Features, Mechanisms, and Prediction. Your contributions will play a crucial role in advancing knowledge in this field.
