Retrospect and Prospect of the Study of Translator’s Subjectivity in China

Abstract: At the end of 20th century, influenced by the Cultural Turn of Translation Studies in the West and the discussion about the Chinese translation of The Red and The Black in China, the study of translator’s subjectivity became one of the main research objects among the Chinese scholars. Creativity and initiative are the original meaning of the translator’s subjectivity. Creativity presupposes initiative, and initiative points to creativity. The study of translator’s subjectivity is not to justify mistranslations and disorderly translations, but to objectively describe the actual situation of the translator in translation. This paper reviews the theoretic process of the translator’s turn, sorts out the representative achievements of the study of translator’s subjectivity, analyzes the permission of translator’s creativity in Western and Chinese traditional translation thoughts and looks forward to the development trend of the subjectivity research of translators. It is found that the creativity and initiative in limitation are the aesthetic and philosophic features of translator’s subjectivity respectively, which will never be altered by time or any thoughts. Besides, the translation itself is the unity of the translator’s creativity and initiative, and translator-centered studies of translation history and translation teaching will be the trends of the future study of translator’s subjectivity.

Pragmatic Analysis of Hedges Used in Defendant's Arguments in Civil Courts -- A Case Study of Lao Rongzhi

Abstract: Hedges are a part of fuzzy language and play an important role in language communication. Since hedges entered into the academic world, there have been numerous researches on hedges. However, few existing studies have analyzed legal discourse from the perspective of Adaptation Theory, and few studies have been conducted on the pragmatic analysis of hedges used in defendants' arguments in civil courts. Therefore, based on the classification method of hedges by Prince, this study conducted a pragmatic analysis of hedges used by defendant in court arguments from the perspective of Adaptation Theory. The trial case of Lao Rongzhi, which has caused a great disturbance in recent years is chosen in this study. It is concluded that defendant often uses multiple hedges to adapt to the context simultaneously, resulting in different communicative effects, such as expressing respect, expressing politeness, arousing sympathy, and avoiding responsibility. The use of hedges is related to the special nature of court trial and the defendant's intention to evade responsibility and obtain a reduction in sentence. By conducting a multidimensional analysis of hedges in defendant’s arguments in court trial, this study aims to enrich the research on hedges in court discourse, increase public attention to defendant discourse, and attempt to provide some inspiration and guidance for defendants to use hedges and for judges, lawyers, and other court participants to respond to hedges.

A Study of Conceptual Metaphors and Metaphor Translation Strategies in the Report on the Work of the Government (2002-2022)

Abstract: As an authoritative political text that conveys China’s voice, promotes China’s ideas and shapes China’s image, the rich metaphorical expressions used in the Report on the Work of the Government plays an important role in strengthening China’s political publicity and promoting cultural exchanges with foreign countries, which are widely noticed and interpreted by people at home and abroad. This study took the 2002-2022 Report on the Work of the Government (bilingual version) as the research subjects, summarized the types of metaphors in the report, and explored the strategies used in metaphor translation, so as to provide new and effective references and ideas for the conceptual metaphors’ translation in political texts. The study drew the following conclusions: (1) The metaphors in the report are various and rich, with 14 types of metaphors included: architectural metaphor, artifact metaphor, war metaphor, journey metaphor, personification metaphor, transportation metaphor, and so on. Among them, the most frequently used metaphor types are first four types; (2) the translation strategies of conceptual metaphors in the report are mainly three ones, namely, retaining metaphor, translating metaphor by deleting metaphor but conveying the meaning, and replacing metaphor with another. The first two translation strategies are used more frequently.

Translation and Climate Change: An Ecocritical Approach to Translation of Moana and Frozen II into Farsi

Abstract: This paper explores the potential of translation as a means to foreground environmental issues, with a specific focus on climate change. Using an ecocritical approach, the animated films Moana and Frozen II were analyzed to uncover the representation of nature and animals and embedded environmental issues. The analysis revealed that both movies contain multiple representations of nature, with Moana depicting it as a promised paradise and the safest place to live, while Frozen II depicts it as a dominant power and a living thing. The representation of animals in both films focuses on their preservation and survival. The study found that the anthropocentric thinking portrayed in both movies was the primary cause of environmental problems. The analysis invites the audience to rethink their anthropocentric tendencies and become more concerned about the environment. The study also highlights the importance of eco-translation and ecocriticism in promoting environmental awareness through translation. This paper shows that translation can be used to foreground environmental issues, specifically climate change, through the lens of ecocriticism. It demonstrates the need for translators to consider environmental issues in their work and highlights the importance of promoting eco-translation and ecocriticism to raise awareness and encourage environmental responsibility. The paper contributes to the growing body of literature on translation and the environment and provides insights into how translators can make a meaningful contribution to environmental activism.

Blended Learning in Teaching English as a Foreign Language in China: A Case of Comprehensive English Courses

Abstract: Blended learning has gained new implications with the development of the Internet, particularly in the context of the global pandemic in recent years. Various educational systems around the world, including China, have witnessed a significant increase in integrating blended learning in teaching English courses for English majors. In the field of higher education, blended learning finds its particular application to a great variety of courses, especially language courses. Under the teaching philosophy of “Outcome-based Education” and via the “Production-oriented Approach”, Comprehensive English courses targeting non-English majors in some universities in China are delivered by means of blended learning. This study presents a detailed case analysis of blended learning in the teaching of Comprehensive English courses for English majors in China, covering course design, learning activities, flipped classroom design, students’ evaluation mechanism, and students’ feedback. The findings reveal that blended learning has greatly transformed the course delivery mode, innovated the teaching of English as a Foreign Language in China, and improved effectively students learning abilities and English capacities. By blended learning, instruction of Comprehensive English course has been innovated in multiple dimensions, including the selection of learning materials for students who are of different proficiency levels, the design of adaptive learning activities, effective integration of online and offline learning, the conducting of theme-based flipped classrooms to develop students’ critical thinking skills and values, and the tracking of students’ learning outcomes. Based on the empirical data and innovative practices in teaching Comprehensive English courses, this study provides valuable implications for applying blended learning in language courses in the international academic community, particularly for scholars in the field of teaching English as a Foreign Language in China.
