Abstract: Imidazotriazole, thiazoles, quinoxaline, benzothiazine, imidazo-thiadiazole, imidazopyridine, imidazothiazole were synthesized via reaction of 3-bromoacetyl-5-bromobenzofuran with each of thiourea, phenylthiourea, thiocetamide, thiocarbamoyl pyrazole, o-phenylenediamine, o-aminothiophenol, 2-aminothia-diazole, aminotriazole, 2-aminopyridine and 2-aminothiazole. The structure of the newly synthesized compounds was confirmed by elemental analysis, IR, 1H NMR, and mass spectral data. All compounds were evaluated for their antimicrobial activities, compound 2 gave excellent results.

Abstract: The aim of this study is to identify the components of water wells in the western region of Saudi Arabia, using Raman spectroscopy. Water wells samples were collected from different areas, distances apart, and same in the depths. The samples were analyzed by LIRA 300 Raman spectrometer. The results showed that the samples contain different materials, beside the water, with different amounts; like: acids, aromatic molecules, salts, amides, alkynes, phenol, ester and sulfonamide.

Abstract: Water quality of Bayelsa Rivers was evaluated using pollution index (PI). Water collected from four stations along Brass River was studied. Water quality status was analysed with reference to World Health Organization (WHO) standard for domestic water supply for water quality and department of petroleum resources permissible levels for produced water discharge. The results obtained where then used for pollution index (PI) computation. A pollution index above one (PI>1) indicates that the water source is unacceptable for the particular use. The river water quality parameters comply to a large extent with most of the set standard. However, it was very notable very poor at station A and D in terms of chloride (Cl-), implying that the river Brass and Oloibiri at the points investigated could be chemically unsafe for human consumption as high chloride indicates high chemical activity and possibly anthropogenic pollutant. The pollution index along the rivers Brass, Ewoama, Okoroma, and Oloibiri were 3.53, 2.19, 2.74, 2.88 in terms of numeric value and 2.85, 2.17, 2.41 and 2.55 in terms of relative damage due to pollution respectively. The result revealed that the pollution at Brass was higher than that upstream at oloibiri possibly due to waste inputs from the oil servicing companies. The index declined downstream from Ewoama as the river recovers. This does not imply that no further pollutants were introduced into the rivers as it flows downstream through these locations but rather the level of pollution was within the assimilative capacity of the river.

Abstract: The effects of optimization condition on solid state fermentation of agro-allied waste for production of amylase using Bacillus sp was investigated. The amylase producing specie, was isolated from soil samples, rotten potatoe and spoiled fruit waste. Optimization of the amylase production using various agro-allied waste such as wheat bran, potatoe peel, Banana peel and rice bran were carried out. All the Bacillus sp isolates were screened by activity zone techniques with iodine solution. Out of 6 bacterial specie, only four (4) of the isolates showed positive results for amylase production. Bacterial strain-3 was found maximum at pH 6. The result showed that potatoe peel produced more enzyme activity under optimization conditions using Tap water, maltose, at pH 6, enzyme activity in the range of 0.555 iu/ml, 0.365 iu/ml, and 0.364 iu/ml respectively. Rice bran produced more enzyme activity of 0.342 iu/ml at 30°C while wheat bran showed an increased enzyme activity using peptone as source of nitrogen at 0.371 iu/ml, than any of the other agro-allied waste used for the amylase production. Owing to the prolific use of thermostable alpha amylase in various industries like paper, food, detergent, brewing and starch liquefaction process, the production of alpha amylase is still going on.

Abstract: Ionic liquids β-cyclodextrin polymer (mono-6-deoxy-6-(1-ethyl-imidazolium)-β-cyclodextrin iodide polymer, ILs-β-CDCP) was synthesized. A novel method based on ILs-β-CDCP solid phase extraction coupled with UV-visible spectrophotometry for the preconcentration / separation allura red (AR) was investigated. The results was shown that AR was adsorbed on ILs-β-CDCP and eluted with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) (1%) rapidly. Under the optimum conditions, the preconcentration factor for AR was 27. The linear range, detection limit (DL), correlation coefficient (R) and relative standard deviation (RSD) were found to be 0.10-9.00 μg/mL, 5.2 μg/L, 0.9987 and 3.10% (n=3, c=4.00 μg/mL), respectively. The adsorption mechanism of ILs-β-CDCP on AR was studied through the FTIR analysis and the inclusion constant of ILs-β-CDCP-AR. This proposed method has been successfully applied to the determination of AR in food samples.
