Abstract: The study assessed teachers’ knowledge and the use of anecdotal records as tool for assessing pupils’ progress in basic schools in Ekiti and Oyo States of Nigeria. Participants were 200 teachers selected from 100 schools in Ekiti and Oyo State using stratified random sampling technique (Ekiti, N=100, Oyo, N=100) and (lower basic, N=100, upper basic, N=100). The instrument for collecting data was a self-constructed questionnaire on knowledge and use of anecdotal records with reliability coefficient estimated at 0.92 using test-retest method and Pearson Product Moment Correlation formula. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, chi square and t-test statistics, tested at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that most teachers lacked the knowledge and do not use anecdotal records for the assessment of the learners in basic schools, there was significant association between the knowledge and use of anecdotal records for assessment. Significance difference existed between lower and upper basic school teachers in the use of anecdotal records in favour of upper basic teachers. It was recommended that teachers in Basic schools should be sensitized on the importance of anecdotal records as effective tools for assessing pupils’ progress in the schools.

Abstract: This study sought to find out issues emerging from student teachers pertaining to how they conceptualise child abuse. The study was premised on the qualitative design methodology. It was conducted when participants were now in the University after completing their teaching practice in the schools. The main data collecting tool was through the essays they wrote in connection with what they had observed in schools pertaining to their concept of child abuse. Their focus was on child abuse by qualified teachers. Since they were now away from their teachers, it was assumed that they would write all their observations without fear hence increasing reliability and validity of data collected. Data were analysed using content analysis. Student teachers conceptualize child abuse as the ill–treatment of pupils by teachers which was in the form of sexuality, physical nature, emotional form and making pupils do domestic activities for teachers that are not the core business of the school curriculum during school time. It was concluded and recommended that pupils must be made aware of the issues regarding child abuse and their rights within this domain.

Abstract: Self-efficacy learning is an important component of learning for college. Academic self-efficacy refers to the degree of confidence that health sciences students could successfully complete on college-task. The purpose of this research lies on the specific characteristics of health sciences students according to their academic self-efficacy by comparing their profiles with students that chose a different discipline. The Academic self-efficacy sample was done to 2089 subjects: 902 women and 1187 men, all of them freshmen students from the different careers at the Autonomous University of Chihuahua who responded to a survey questionnaire, with an average age of 18.23 years (SD = 0.74). This is a quantitative approach with a descriptive survey design type. The results obtained by comparing students of health sciences, with students from other disciplines show that perceived self-efficacy in academic behaviors is very similar each other.

Abstract: The prognosis in tomorrow’s crowded competitive economic environment will be for people to sharpen their skills, build their capacities and obtain the requisite succours that can enable them achieve their dreams especially, those already disadvantaged by natural collage and human disarrangements. Even though local or indigenous knowledge is appropriate in this regard, it does not suffice as a contrivance that can radically stimulate long term growth, and by transforming or renovating human aptitude as formal education does. This study examines whether there were any differences between parents educational status and girls acquisition of formal education and the effect of girls’ acquisition of formal education. In conducting this study, a mixed method approach was adopted. The study revealed that the probability of girls acquiring formal education in Ghana can be directly related to the educational status of their parents. Thus, there were significant relationships in the response variables. About 76% of the respondents believed that formal education can help the girl child achieve her dreams in future while 24% of respondents shared a different view. In this study, we argue that any effort at promoting or enhancing the acquisition of formal education for girls in Ghana must be focused on putting greater emphasis on influencing the perception and personal beliefs of parents who have never been to school before. This is because parents provide a source of motivation and model for their children. The study concludes that the educational status of parents has a direct effect on the future of girls.

Abstract: The overall aim of this exercise is to reflect on the merits and caveats of phenomenological interviewing as an educational research tool. To this end, I endeavor to conduct small-scale research using phenomenological interviewing and analysis and to reflect on the process. The phenomenon being researched is junior secondary pupils’ (13-16) lived experience of teacher-pupil mentoring as part of a 2011-2012 school based mentoring initiative in a mixed gender community school in South East Ireland. Issues related to the use of phenomenology in educational research shall be presented, leading to the derived research question. Interviews as a research instrument shall be discussed, with particular emphasis on phenomenological interviewing, followed by sampling and ethical concerns. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) and discussion of findings are presented, followed by conclusions drawn from the study. Finally, I shall reflect on whether the process has succeeded in answering the research question whilst also offering my opinions on the promises and pitfalls of phenomenological interviewing and suggestions for future practice.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine the concept images of individuals regarding trapezoid. In order to attain this objective, this research was designed based on qualitative approach. A total of 156 students attending 5th through 8th grade middle school and 36 middle school Mathematics teacher candidates from Turkey were chosen as participants in the study. Definitions and drawings of trapezoids were asked of the participants and their responses were used to analyze their concept images. The study was conducted using semi-structured interview technique. Data were analysed through content analysis. Results were presented both in the form of frequency and actual participants’ statements. According to data obtained from the participants, many of the definitions acquired were personal rather than formal. It was also determined that individuals used non-critical properties in non-formal and incorrect definitions and that they created some misconceptions by making excessive generalizations. Based on the data, some participants developed the concept image indicating that the sides and angles should be completely different. As a result, conceptual levels of the trapezoid within the framework of the obtained concept images were determined.

Abstract: The valorization of university teaching is of key concern to this institution’s academic and political actors and is a foundation of pedagogical innovation. In this qualitative research I explored how thirty-two professors, recipients of the Université de Montréal excellence in teaching award, define their conception of pedagogical innovation. An analysis of the data allowed me to identify seven distinct notions of the concept of pedagogical innovation, to construct an updated definition and to propose a pedagogical innovation conception cycle.
